How do aircraft know at what altitude they are flying?
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009When an airplane (or any sort of motorized aircraft, for that matter) is flying, they have a gage that tells them the altitude they are at, and if they are losing or gaining altitude. It also flashes an emergency light if they are losing altitude too fast. How does the plane’s systems know?
What are everyones favorite aircraft?
Monday, February 16th, 2009I love aviation with a passion and bored right now so what are some favorites among people? I personally love the 757..gorgeous aircraft. In my opinion the most elegant bird boeing ever made plus nothing can beat the roar of the PW2000’s or the RB211’s not to mention the feeling of a 757 takeoff!

Are there any differences between Fuel Tanks of different Aircraft Models, except Fuel Capacity?
Friday, February 13th, 2009Am jst curious to know whether are there any differences between the Fuel Tanks of different Aircraft Models other than the fuel capacity of the tanks.
Is there any change in the naming convenetions of the Fuel Tanks in different Models? For Ex. Tank 1, Tank 2, Tank 3, Center Aux Tank, Tail Tank … etc.
The details am interested in are…
Can I have uniform fuel loading computation that can be used irrespective of the models. For Ex. First, Load Fuel equally into Tank1, Tank 2, Tank 3 till Tank 1 & Tank3 is filled to max capacity.
Then, Load Tank 2 till it is filled to its maximum capacity.
Still, if U have remaining fuel to be loaded… load into the Center Aux and Tail Tank as per the GFS Ratio.
And fuel can be loaded to optional fuel tanks only in case the standard fuel tanks are filled?!
Kindly validate the above OR provide some reference to get information on theabove.

How do rocket powered aircraft fly?
Thursday, February 12th, 2009I am asking the above question in terms of lift. Most aircraft fly by creating lift using their wings and AOA, but I’m curious to know how aircraft like the X-15 (with virtually no wings) create lift. Rocket-propelled aircraft generally have a huge forward thrust, but I don’t understand how this forward force translates to lift.
To Kiffin,
That’s very interesting, but what I’m trying to get at is how thrust plays into the creation of lift. Does the forward thrust of aircraft (say turbines/rocket engines) play a role in the creation of lift?
